This is called stock market timing and depending on how heavily you are involved in a particular company selling just before the markets go into a decline can be termed insider trading. The recent scandals in mutual funds have led people to be wary of stock market timing. In these cases, the companies actually prohibited the ordinary investor from selling when there seemed to be a downward swing, but did allow a select few to sell their stocks.

For most investors, stock market timing means they watch the market prices closely and keep an eye on the rise of decline of prices and look for a trend. If they see a trend where the markets seem to be rising, then they hold onto the stock. If the markets seem to start a downward trend, most investors tend to try to sell their stocks, so that they can hold onto the profits they have already made.

Stock market timing refers to identifying trends in the market to help you identify the right time to buy or sell. It is a system used by most investors who are looking to make money in the stock market. The investor takes advantage of news about the economy, interest rates, conflicts etc, to take advantage of the fact that the market may rise or fall the next day. Of course, some investors have lost money this way when the market did not behave as they expected it to.

Those who invest heavily in the stock market can pretty well predict when the prices will rise or fall. If they have lost money in the past, they watch the stock prices until they have regained what they have lost and then they sell. This really doesn't have anything to do with unethical trading because it is done when the timing is right for the investor.

Stock market timing means different things to different investors. If you are trying to make a quick dollar, then you will find yourself buying and selling on a regular basis. If you are investing for the future, you don't really look at the markets the same way for timing purposes.
