Investment companies can be a beneficial way to create a profit for you. Investment companies (e.g. corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, and business trusts) are known for their investment into securities. Investment companies take the money invested by its investors and invest it into various different companies. The investors then share in the profits and losses of the company. The investment return is usually based on how well the company's assets are doing.
Investment companies are broken down into three major types of companies: mutual funds, closed-ended funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs). Mutual funds are an investment company that pools money from many investors and invests that money in stocks, bonds, and other securities. Closed-ended funds, the third type of investment companies, are similar to that of mutual funds without the flexibility. This investment company only allows the public to invest for a short period of time and then has complete control over the investment. Additionally, one may not be able to redeem their investment until the investment company allows.
The final type of investment companies are unit investment trusts (UITs). This investment company is a combination of both mutual funds and closed-end funds. Basically, the UIT is open to the public for a short period of time and then controls all investment into the company, much like the closed-end funds. However, investors can also redeem their investment at any time. The one major difference between these investment companies is that UITs invest in a fixed set of stocks or bonds, where as mutual funds and closed-end funds can change their investments over time.
All three investment companies are overseen by the federal Securities Exchange Commission. However, some investment companies may not fall under the same rules or be excluded, such as private investment companies. These investment companies are only open to private investors and are usually limited to about 100 investors.
